Mayor Barnett Invited to Join Call with President-elect and Vice President-elect
Yesterday, Mayor Bryan K. Barnett joined a video conference call with President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris to discuss how city and federal leaders can work together as one country to beat COVID-19.
“I was pleased to represent Rochester Hills and the needs of our residents to President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris,” stated Barnett. “ It’s always good to be with decision makers who can impact our community and to share with them firsthand the needs of our residents and small businesses.”
The president-elect thanked mayors for their congratulations and pledged to rise above politics and work with the bipartisan group of mayors as partners on critical issues facing the country and individual states, especially the ongoing response to COVID-19 and the related economic crisis.
The president-elect and vice president-elect acknowledged that mayors are on the front lines of dealing with COVID and the economic recovery — and made clear their intention to improve coordination with city, state, and local governments to ensure an effective, bipartisan response.
The president-elect, vice president-elect, and the mayors had a robust discussion about critical ways cities and the federal government can work together to beat COVID, including expanding testing, preparing for the distribution of vaccines, shoring up shortages on supplies and equipment, making sure schools can open safely, and securing economic relief for individuals, businesses, cities, and states.
Participants also discussed how the federal government and cities can work together to address income inequality, climate change, and systemic racism, and to improve the infrastructure of American cities.
Over the past year, Mayor Barnett has worked tirelessly with the federal government to personally advocate for Rochester Hills through his participation in meetings with President Trump, Treasury Secretary Mnuchin, HUD Secretary Carson, National Economic Advisor Larry Kudlow, and Coronavirus Response Coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx.
“It’s important to have Rochester Hills at the table no matter who is serving as our President,” states Barnett. “We will continue to have a strong and positive relationship.”
Mayor Barnett and Mayor Duggan of Detroit were the only mayors from Michigan on the call.
