The City of Rochester Hills (MI) is interested in encouraging students to pursue occupations in City government through its PATHWAY TO PUBLIC SERVICE Fellowship Program. The program is designed to elevate the awareness of careers in municipal government and to inspire the next generation of City employees. Six fellowships in the amount of $5,000 each will fund educational costs including tuition, books and fees toward a student’s bachelor’s or master’s degree. Awardees will also learn about what we do at the City, why we do it and how they can make a meaningful difference in the life of a community. The fellowships are being funded through a grant received from the Wells Fargo CommunityWINS Grant Program. We invite you to submit your application today!

Number of Awards and Award Amounts: The City will award six (6) fellowships in the amount of $5,000 each toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

Qualifications: Fellowships will be awarded to juniors or seniors in college as of Fall ‘19 seeking a four-year degree and students with a bachelor’s degree pursuing a master’s degree. Those considering careers in municipal government are especially encouraged to apply. We value diversity and inclusion as a foundation for innovation and seek applicants who represent a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Selection Process & Criteria: A selection committee identified by the City of Rochester Hills will review applications. The selection process may include an in-person interview with this committee. The committee may also ask applicants to provide references. In terms of criteria, fellowship recipients should have a solid academic record and public service background and demonstrate purposeful and meaningful involvement in their community. Candidates should also explain what sets them apart and offer a compelling rationale explaining why they should receive this award.

City of Rochester Hills Fellowship Project: Fellowship recipients will participate in an interactive group project led by the Mayor’s Office as a condition of the receipt of the fellowship award. This project will require attendance at 8-10 City related events/meetings to learn about all aspects of municipal government – the what, why and the how behind the City’s work -- culminating in a group project and presentation. The planned timing for events/meetings and project/presentation will be April through August, 2019. Strong writing, presentation and interpersonal skills are required.
