Internship Opportunities

The City of Rochester Hills is interested in recruiting its next generation of employees. What a better introduction to a career in municipal government than through an internship? You’ll learn what we do, why we do it and how you can make a meaningful difference in the life of a community, all while gaining valuable experience. Here are four paid internship opportunities that currently exist. Please join us!


MAYOR’S OFFICE INTERN
The intern in the Mayor’s Office will assist with a variety of community events and programs and numerous projects, as assigned. This student will interact with City departments, residents and businesses and learn how the City operates. Students majoring in Public Administration, Public Policy, Communication, Public Engagement, or related degrees are preferred, but other disciplines will be considered. Prospects must have attained at least junior year college status as an undergraduate or be a graduate student. Strong writing, presentation and interpersonal skills are required. Candidates must be mature, flexible and maintain the integrity of confidential information at all times. The intern will work approximately 16 hours per week. Specific hours will be based on the City’s need and the student’s schedule. This internship will begin as early as January and continue for three or four months, depending on the student's availability.

ROCHESTER HILLS TELEVISION (RHTV) INTERN
The Rochester Hills media team has a unique internship opportunity for students with a course background in or some experience with video production. RHTV interns get a chance to hone the production skills they have learned in class in a fast-paced, real-world environment, producing a variety of communication elements for the City of Rochester Hills. These elements range from shooting raw footage of a place or event to light script writing to video editing to idea generation for City events or communications. Key duties include helping to produce video projects for City cable, website, presentations and social media and shooting and editing video for internal and external use. Hours will be established by mutual agreement of supervisor and student. This internship will begin as early as January and continue for three or four months, depending on the student's availability.

HUMAN RESOURCES INTERN
The Human Resources intern will assist the department with stewardship of personnel files and other compliance related projects, as well as assist with new hire orientation and the seasonal hiring program. Interested candidates should be a minimum junior year college status as an undergrad or be a graduate student. Students with declared Human Resources or like majors are encouraged to apply. Candidates must be mature, maintain the integrity of confidential information at all times and possess strong communication skills. Applicants should have the ability to work 16 hours per week, a minimum of two or three workdays Monday through Friday. This internship will begin as early as January and continue for three or four months, depending on the student's schedule.

MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SERVICES (MIS) / IT INTERN
The MIS department intern will perform multiple duties, including network computer setups and installation of standard software, such as Microsoft Office and business applications. The intern will also perform more technical duties as assigned and qualified to perform. Candidates should be actively enrolled in or have recently completed a Computer Science or Information Technology related program, have an interest in Microsoft applications and operating systems and an interest in Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Must be dependable with strong customer service skills, willing to learn and adaptable with a “can-do” attitude. Applicants should have the ability to work 16 hours per week, a minimum of two or three workdays Monday through Friday. This internship will begin as early as January and continue for three or four months, depending on the student's availability.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND APPLICATION PROCESS
In addition to duties described above, all interns will participate in a group project led by the Mayor’s Office. All positions are paid at $13 per hour.
