Energy Requirements in the Michigan Residential Code

October 4, 2021, the State of Michigan enacted the 2018 Michigan Residential Code (2018 MRC). This code update requires new homes and additions to homes to meet additional energy design requirements above the previous code.

Required Application & Worksheet

Effective February 8, 2016, building contractors and homeowners acting as their own building contractors will be required to provide two completed sets of the City of Rochester Hills Energy Code Worksheet with construction plans and a Building Permit Application.

Energy Design Requirements

The 2018 Michigan Residential Code requires a residential project to comply with mandatory energy design requirements, and then select one of several methods to show the design also meets additional energy code requirements.

Applicants are encouraged to contact the Building Department at 248-656-4615 if they have questions about completing the worksheet or about the 2018 Michigan Residential Code and Energy Requirements.
