Southeast Michigan is the home of the automotive industry and the pinnacle of innovation and intellectual capacity.  The automobile is the most advanced consumer product in the world and research and development activity in support of this industry spurs the creation of innumerable ideas and patents.  Michigan is 2nd nationally in expenditures for industrial R & D and R & D performance; and fourth in high-tech employment.  It ranks seventh in the nation in high-tech occupational employment.
