The Southeast Michigan region is the economic powerhouse for the entire state of Michigan. The region boasts the most job growth, almost half of the state's population (48%), and houses the headquarters for many of the state's corporate occupants.

- 18% of Southeast Michigan's workforce is employed in the professional and business service industry. Other employment dominant industries include manufacturing (16%), education and health services (12%), and retail trade (11%)
- Key Southeast Michigan industries include high-tech, research and development, and manufacturing; health education and professional services; retail trade; finance, insurance and real estate; and construction.
- Detroit Metropolitan area ranked 7th in the total number of business establishments compared to other metropolitan areas within the U.S.
