Ceremony introduces 2010-2011
Rochester Hills Government Youth Council Members
August 10, 2010

On the warm summer evening of August 9th, a line of bright young faces stood before the Rochester Hills City Council to take their Oath of Office to become members of the Rochester Hills Government Youth Council (RHGYC) for the 2010-2011 school year.  Five new members will join ten returning members to comprise this year's RHGYC, and will embark on a year-long journey of learning and service to the Rochester Hills community.

Sara Etienne, Vice-Chairperson, and Kaitlyn Forbes, Secretary, for the 2010-2011 RHGYC presented their Final Report to Council highlighting the past year filled with many projects and events, and expressed their gratitude to Council and the City for the opportunity to serve as members.  Three outgoing seniors were recognized for their accomplishments, and their academic successes were lauded as they will be attending colleges and universities including Central Michigan University, the University of Michigan, and Washington and Lee University.

This year's RHGYC consists of ninth through twelfth graders from public and private high schools throughout the area, and students were selected to give representation to each of the four Rochester Hills Council Districts.  The students are required to reside in Rochester Hills to be eligible for consideration and were selected by an application process which included an essay, recommendation letters and an intense interview.

Council Representative to the RHGYC, Vern Pixley, congratulated the outgoing and incoming RHGYC members and thanked them for their service.  Leanne Scott, Youth Advisor and City Council Coordinator, presented a video of the highlights of the RHGYC's accomplishments this past year, including participation at many City functions and the planning of several very successful events.  Clerk Jane Leslie administered the Oath of Office, presenting the 2010-2011 RHGYC members to Council, Mayor Bryan Barnett and the community.  Following the ceremony, a reception provided an opportunity for both old and new RHGYC members to meet and greet Council, City Administrators and community members.

Although the selection process for 2010-2011 is now complete, interested residents are invited to watch the RHGYC page on the City's website at www.rochesterhills.org for information on how to apply for next year's Youth Council.  Information will be available for 2011-2012 in early 2010.
