West Nile Virus
The Parks Department should complete the treatment of subdivision catch basins for mosquito control under the West Nile Virus Abatement Program by the end of June.
Oakland County initiated the program in 2003 and Rochester Hills has participated in an active program every year since. Each year Department of Public Services crews have Vactored (vacuum cleaned) our catch basins prior to the placement of mosquito control briquettes. This larvicide treatment prevents the emergence of adult mosquitoes from the standing water deep inside the basins, lasts the entire summer, and specifically targets mosquitoes in our area that are known to carry the virus. Grant funding from Oakland County has covered a portion of the costs associated with this abatement program.
Oakland County officials are requesting residents who find dead birds to contact the West Nile Virus hot line at (877-377-3641).
