Who Was Helen V. Allen?
Helen V. AllenHelen V. Allen was a dedicated public servant and community member. She started working for Avon Township in the 1930s and spent the next 40 years with the township. In 1948, Allen was elected treasurer of Avon Township. She held this office until her death in 1970. In addition to being the township’s treasurer, Allen was a member of many community organizations. Some of the organizations she was involved with were Blue Star Mother, National Federation of Republican Women, Parent-Teacher Association, and the Oakland County Treasurers’ Association.

Helen Allen’s sudden death in December 1970 was met with “shock and grief.” Local newspapers reported that the announcement of her death at the Township Board and Planning Commission was “received with profound sadness.” The township honored Allen by flying flags at half-staff and closing the township’s office to allow workers to attend her funeral.
