Inside the EEC, you'll find informative displays, interactive exhibits, and resources to help you appreciate the diverse ecosystems found in our community. Programs, hikes, and day camps are offered to promote an understanding of our community's natural surroundings and the wildlife that inhabit it. Highlands Trail
This 1/2-mile trail will take you through diverse habitat including open fields, mature oaks, northern hardwood forests, aspen groves, lowlands, a stream, a pond, and a blueberry fen.
Riverside Trail
This 3/4-mile trail leads down to the Clinton River, through the adjacent wetlands, and includes a hillside climb on the southwest end.
Deer Trail
This interesting 1/3-mile trail is a favorite hangout of the white-tailed deer. You should be able to find tracks, scrapes, rubs, or other signs of their presence.
Wildlife
The quiet and careful observer may see a white-tailed deer, fox squirrel, or a great blue heron along the river. Up above, many native birds, including the black-capped chickadee, American goldfinch, and great horned owl have been spotted.
Picnic Area
There are several picnic tables along the trails and pond. Please remove all food, wrappers, beverage containers, etc., and never, ever feed the animals.
Restrooms
Modern restrooms are available at City Hall during normal business hours and at the Environmental Education Center (EEC) during scheduled programs.
Pets
Pets are not allowed in or near the EEC or on the trails to preserve the natural wildlife habitat.
Bicycles

Gazebo
A small gazebo sits in a natural alcove near the entrance to the Highlands Trail next to City Hall.

Scenic Overlook (Currently Closed)
A scenic overlook of the ravine abuts the Highlands Trail. The view from the overlook gives you a chance to look into the tops of some of the most majestic forest trees, dominated by oaks on top of the ridge and by ash, maples and basswood on the bottom. Squirrels make their nests high in the treetops while raccoons and opossums live in the tree cavities. A variety of birds can be seen flying around.
