 25TH ANNUAL MICHIGAN LIFEGUARD COMPETITION

The Michigan Lifeguard Competition is held annually at Spencer Park. This is a one-day event that requires lifeguards representing agencies throughout the state to compete in each of the following events: 350-meter swim across the lake; 700-meter rescue board; deep dive and recovery (to 13'); CPR; and a 1-mile run. Prizes are awarded to the agencies sponsoring the winning 2-person teams.
COYOTES AND YOU: WHAT YOU CAN DO
The Eastern Coyote can be found throughout the state of Michigan including the Metro-Detroit area. To help our residents understand the behavior and science of coyotes, we invited a noted coyote behavioralist, a biologist from DNRE and a Conservation Officer from the DNRE to provide information. BATTING CAGES TO OPEN FRIDAY, APRIL 9TH
 The Borden Park batting cages open on Friday, April 9th for the weekends only (Friday through Sunday) until Monday, April 26th, when the cages will be open seven days a week. Click here for all the details including batting cage hours throughout the summer.
Batting cages can be used on a per token basis, at a cost of $1.00 per token. Each token gives you about 15 pitches. Batting cages can also be reserved by the hour for $20.00 per hour per cage. Call at least 72 hours in advance for an hourly reservation.

RYSL Helps Fund Soccer Field Renovations

Mike Dubeck and some of the Rochester Soccer Club players present a $20,000 check to Mayor Bryan K. Barnett. | Rochester Hills was recently the recipient of a $20,000 check from the Rochester Youth Soccer League. The donation will be used for renovation work on the youth soccer fields located at Borden Park, scheduled for spring and fall 2009, to improve the playing conditions of fields 10, 11 and 12.
Last fall Mike Dubeck, Field Coordinator for the RYSL, contacted Bert Hallewas, Park Ranger with the Parks Division, to discuss a possible donation to improve the fields. This winter several meetings were held to determine the scope of the project, and early this year the RYSL Board approved the donation.
The donation will allow the Parks Division to purchase some drainage material, topdressing, grass seed, and fertilizer not included in the Parks budget. The field renovations will help prevent cancellation of games on rainy days and provide better game conditions for all youth groups that use our soccer fields.

The Adams Road Mastodon Site Dedication
On July 7, 2006, the Road Commission for Oakland County and Dan's Excavating, Inc., discovered the remains of a large prehistoric animal while excavating for the realignment of Adams Road south of M-59 and adjacent to the Clinton River Trail. 
Cranbrook scientists determined that the Adams Road Mastodon was a young male around 25 years old that stood approximately 8' tall at the shoulder. Radiocarbon dating indicates the animal died about 12,360 years ago.
 A dedication of the mastodon site was held o n October 15, 2008 with Mayor Bryan Barnett and Keith Kennedy uncovering the mastodon informational sign purchased with funding from the Rochester Hills Lions Club.

River Overlook on Clinton River Trail
This is the latest enhancement to the Clinton River Trail ... from sketch to completion. Thanks to a donation from the Rochester Rotary group, there is now a beautiful loop off the Clinton River Trail that overlooks the river and provides a restful and scenic turnoff. This wooded refuge offers benches for viewing the Clinton River, quiet reflection, and just a place to relax. It is located at Mile Marker #4, north of the Hamlin Road entrance.
 
Clinton River Trail Surfacing Completed
 We are pleased to announce that crews have completed the surfacing of the 4.5-mile segment of the Clinton River Trail in Rochester Hills and it is open to the public. The trail now has a smooth 10' wide riding surface and 2' wide shoulders to accommodate walkers, joggers, and bicyclists.
By using salvaged asphalt from the Shadow Woods paving project, the city was able to save $300,000 over the original estimate for surfacing this length of the trail. The used asphalt was ground up, pulverized, placed 4 inches deep on the trail, and rolled to make a smooth surface. This final phase completes the project that began with new bridges over the Clinton River and behind City Hall, intersection improvements at all the road crossings, pedestrian islands constructed to make the road crossings safer, and a vault toilet facility installed by Veterans Memorial Pointe just east of Livernois.
The Clinton River Trail is part of a community-wide trail system with links to the West Bloomfield Trail to the west, the Paint Creek Trail to the north, and the Macomb Orchard Trail to the east. Click for a Clinton River Trail Map.
While the surfacing is completed and the trail is open, final cleanup is taking place. Additional amenities, including signage, benches, and trash cans, will be added later this summer. The public is invited to give this new surface a try and to send all comments to email.
