FOR STREETS IN ROCHESTER HILLS
Trees Prohibited under the City's Street Tree Ordinance (Article II, Section 106-56):
Boxelder (Acer negundo)
Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum)
Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima)
Catalpa (Catalpa speciosa)
Russian-olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia)
Poplar species (Populus sp.)
Willow species (Salix sp.)
American Elm* (Ulmus americana)
Siberian Elm (Ulmus pumila)
*Disease resistant varieties such as 'Jefferson', 'Princeton' and 'Valley Forge' are acceptable for right-of-way locations having sufficient space.
Other trees not recommended:
Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) all varieties that bear seed (including 'Crimson King') are considered invasive. Norway maples are also susceptible to diseases and girdling roots that can significantly impact longevity.
Red Maple (Acer rubrum) due to popularity red maples (especially certain varieties, e.g. 'Red Sunset') have been over-planted.
Buckeye and Horsechestnut (Aesculus sp.) litter problem; only seedless varieties should be used for tree lawn locations (between the sidewalk and street).
Female Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus) litter problem; only seedless male varieties should be used for tree lawn locations (between the sidewalk and street).
Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) litter problem; only seedless varieties should be used for tree lawn locations (between the sidewalk and street); seedling grown sweetgums may not be hardy in Michigan (hardy varieties include 'Lane Roberts', 'Moraine', 'Worplesdon').
Blue (Colorado) Spruce (Picea pungens) susceptible to disease that can significantly impact longevity.
Austrian Pine (Pinus nigra) susceptible to disease that can significantly impact longevity.
Flowering Pear (Pyrus calleryana) due to popularity flowering pears have been over-planted; litter problem and considered invasive; 'Bradford' is susceptible to storm damage.
