Forestry Division Tree Planting Programs
Since its creation in 1985, the Forestry Division has planted more than 6,000 shade and ornamental trees along city roads, in parks, and at other city facilities. Most of these trees have been planted along streets in new subdivisions, as part of the "Subdivision Tree Planting Program". Under this program, developers of all new subdivisions are required to provide funds for street trees to be planted in front of each home. The Forestry Division oversees the planting operation as each new subdivision nears completion.
A second program (the "Citizen Tree Planting Program") was implemented in 1995, making street trees available to residents or businesses at the city's cost of installation. This program became the current "Cooperative Tree Planting Program" in 1999, when new policy was established authorizing use of the City's Tree Fund to match 50% of the cost of each tree purchased. For more information and to print an order form, please click on the Cooperative Tree Planting Program link above.
The Forestry Division has compiled lists of acceptable street trees and trees for general landscaping (see links above). The MSU Extension office also has a list of "Recommended Alternatives to Ash Trees for Michigan' Lower Peninsula" that is available on-line.
Please remember that a permit (free) is required before trees or other plantings can be installed on the right-of-way. Planting success depends on choosing the site carefully and following the correct planting procedures (see links above). Properly located and planted trees provide a lifetime of benefits for the entire community. For more information, please contact the Forestry Division at 248-656-4673.
