Tree Trimming Guide Keep Our Public Pathways Safe Storm and Brush Cleanup Pruning Specs for Bike Paths
For the purpose of street tree maintenance (trimming and removal), the Forestry Division has sectioned the city into five tree management districts. Tree maintenance work is focused in one district each year, resulting in a five-year maintenance cycle. Most of the maintenance work is scheduled during the winter months (December through March). The division also responds to requests from residents for tree trimming/maintenance of any trees affecting city road right-of-way year-round.
The Forestry Division maintains a database, which records maintenance requirements and histories for all trees growing on city road right-of-way. Trees growing on city right-of-way are trimmed as necessary to facilitate vehicle and pedestrian passage and safety. Trees having structural defects, which pose a significant hazard to city streets or walkways, are trimmed or removed as necessary to eliminate the hazard.
Please refer to our Tree Trimming Guide to view diagrams outlining the city's tree maintenance specifications for streets and walkways.
Fall/Winter 2009-2010 Program
The Rochester Hills Forestry Division will begin its annual street tree maintenance program in November and will continue until all work is completed. Operations will be conducted by Parks & Forestry and contracted crews.
Under the program, trees and shrubs that impede the passage of vehicles along streets or pedestrians on pathways, or that interfere with safe sight distance requirements will be addressed.
Although some work will occur in various locations throughout the city, the main emphasis of the 2009-2010 program will be in the southwest portion of the city (Sections 19, 20, and 28-33).
If trees and shrubs growing on private property interfere with streets or pathways, residents will be notified regarding what action is required of them. No notification will be given for trees and shrubs growing on city right-of-way.
Anyone with questions about the program or its requirements can contact the Forestry Division at 248-656-4673.
