The City of Rochester Hills Fire Department has conducted a hazard identification and vulnerability assessment. This assessment of the city identified potential natural events, technological events, and human initiated events. Based on these assessments, we have developed response plans as required.
Rochester Hills is subject to potential natural events that are possible in most communities. We also have potential for some technological events such as hazardous materials. These events would most likely occur in one of the industrial subdivisions located in the city or along a major roadway such as M-59.
With regard to human events (terrorist attacks), there have been no high profile targets identified in Rochester Hills. There are no military, or biological or nuclear facilities located in Rochester Hills.
The Rochester Hills Fire Department is well prepared and trained to respond to Fire, EMS, and all types of rescue emergencies. Our Special Operations Response Team is part of the North Oakland Emergency Response Team. This team is trained and equipped to respond to hazardous materials incidents, building collapse, trench, confined space and water rescue.
How we react to specific incidents varies based on the type of incident, location, weather conditions, time of the day, and magnitude to name just a few variables. Communication with the general public will generally occur on cable channel 55, and based on severity of the incident all cable, network channels and radio stations.
The City of Rochester Hills does not have any nuclear power plants nearby. The closest location is Down River. At this time, the sirens are for tornados only. The City does not have any fallout shelters.
With the lack of high profile targets in Rochester Hills and the preparedness of the Fire Department to respond, there is no reason for unreasonable concern by our residents.
