How to Prepare Your Family for a Disaster
Create a family plan:
v Identify the emergency types your family may face.
v Designate places your family can meet-at your residence, in your community and beyond.
v Designate a point of contact for family members to call if they become separated.
v Keep an updated list of all emergency contact numbers for your family and your municipality.
v Don't forget to include a plan for your pets, if you have any.
v Review your insurance coverage.
v Document your possessions: use pictures, video and lists-whatever works for you.
v Gather all important family documents and store them in a waterproof container.
v Every six months, replace the water, food and batteries in your emergency kit.
v Talk to your physician or pharmacist about the quantity and storage of prescription medications.
Prepare an emergency kit:
v Water: one gallon per person per day for five days
v Nonperishable food, non-electric can opener, plastic utensils, paper plates
v Blankets and pillows
v Extra clothing and sturdy shoes
v Personal hygiene items
v First aid kit, nonprescription medications, whistle, utility knife, plastic sheathing
v Tool kit with assorted screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, hammer, etc.
v Flashlights, radio, extra batteries (radio tuned to AM 1610)
v Cash, travelers checks
v Special items for infants and elderly
v Liquid soap, bleach, disinfectant, plastic bucket with lid
v Good supply of plastic bags in various sizes
v Toys, books, games
v Consider creating a smaller version of the emergency kit for your car
