Starting a Business
Starting a business can be a daunting experience if you don't know where to begin; but as intimidating as it might be, entrepreneurship can be a rewarding experience. Understanding business start-up from A to Z is a process that Rochester Hills economic development staff would like to provide assistance. Below you will find helpful links and information to get you started in making one of life's most important decisions!
How to Start a Business
Step 1. Begin writing a Business Plan. While proper and thorough planning is vital to the success of any business, this process does not have to be complete before moving on to other steps in starting your business. Business plans are live documents, which means that they should be reviewed and revised periodically to ensure that your business is on the right track, and to make any necessary changes in response to current market demands. To view a sample business plan outline, visit the following link for more information.
Step 2. Register your name. Visit the Oakland County clerk's office Web Site for more information on how to register your business' name in Oakland County. To check name availability for corporations, limited liability companies or limited partnerships, contact the Department of Labor & Economic Growth, Bureau of Commercial Services, Corporation Division, at 517.241.6470 or online at www.michigan.gov/corporations.
Step 3. Determine the legal structure most appropriate for your business. Refer to the Corporate Comparison document to view an explanative chart on various legal structures. Ultimately, it is best to consult an attorney, accountant or business counselor at the nearest MI-SBTDC to help determine which business structure is best for the business.
Step 4. Determine if there is a requirement for special licensing and/or permits. Some occupations, professions and business activities require certification or licensing. You may access the licensing, certification and permit information on-line at www.michigan.org/medc/services/license/.
The City of Rochester Hills no longer requires businesses to register, however depending on the type and location of the business, there may be specific permitting and zoning requirements. Contact the Planning & Development department at (248) 656-4660 for more information.
Step 5. Contact the local Michigan Small Business Technology and Development Center (MI-SBTDC) satellite office to access free business counseling. By contacting the MI-SBTDC, you will be connected to a knowledgeable and professional counselor that will guide you through the entire process.
